One of the biggest benefits of dog ownership is the physical activity that they demand. Even the most docile, and let’s face it, laziest of dogs, love to romp and get outside to enjoy the fresh air. And unless you have a fenced-in yard, you probably can’t just open the door to send Fido outside, only to call him back at dinner time.
The best thing to do? Get outside with your pet and enjoy the fresh air with them. Go for walks. Take hikes. Visit dog parks to let Fido get in all the butt and tree-sniffing he desires. Trust us, you’ll benefit just as much from the experience as he will.
Our team at Easy Scoops loves dogs. And why shouldn’t we? We’re in the dog poop pick-up business. But aside from picking up doggy doo-doo, we love getting outside and exploring the nearby parks and trails with our pets. So, we’ve put together a list of our favorite dog-friendly parks and hiking trails in Oklahoma City. All you need to do is pick the right one for you!
Let Your Dog Indulge His Sense of Adventure
We promise we’ll get to that list of trails and dog parks. But before we do, let’s talk about a few rules of the road, so to speak, first. While outdoor activity is super important to the health of your pet, there are a few things to keep in mind before spending a day away from home.
Here are some tips to make sure your dog park and hiking trail adventures are the best they can be.
- Comfort is key (for both of you): You might be tempted to grab any pair of shoes, but trust us—your feet will thank you for choosing something sturdy, comfortable, and designed for long walks. Fido may love sniffing around, but you’ll be the one following after him!
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Bring plenty of water for both you and your pup. Nobody wants to deal with a thirsty dog dragging their tongue on the trail, or a human wishing for a water fountain that’s miles away. Pro tip: Bring a collapsible water bowl for your four-legged friend. It’s paw-some! And, the American Hiking Society suggests that you bring at least eight ounces of water per pup per hour of hiking. And that’s just for the pups.
- Watch those paws: Trails can be rough on your dog’s feet. Keep an eye out for hot pavement, sharp rocks, or prickly plants. If your dog starts doing the “paw lift dance,” it’s time for a break. And, be sure to give your pet’s paws some love when you get home. Musher’s is a great product and can help relieve paw discomfort and help prepare your pup’s feet for the next hike.
- Pick it up, and pack it out: Picking up dog poop isn’t the most glamorous part of owning a pet. We totally get it. But nobody wants to step in that mess! Be a good trail buddy and scoop as you go, then toss it in the proper bins. Fido will thank you for keeping his favorite spots clean!
- Let someone know where you’re headed: If you’re planning a long hike, it’s always smart to bring a friend or let someone else know where you’re going. If Fido gets distracted by a squirrel and leads you off the beaten path, at least someone will know where to start the search party!
- Snacks for hungry tummies: Don’t forget to pack some treats for your furry hiking buddy! After all, they’re working hard out there too. A little reward along the way can keep their tail wagging the whole trip.
Ready to Hit the Trails and Parks?
And without further ado, let’s get to it. Our list below provides just some of our favorite parks and trails in the Oklahoma City area. Be sure to pay attention to the trail distances and difficulty, and do some of your own research before making your final selection. Also, be sure to know what your dog—and you—can handle. Taking a short-legged puppy or senior dog out on a 4-mile hike might not be the best idea.
- PAW Park
First on our list is one of the best dog parks in Oklahoma City. PAW Park at 3303 NW Grand Blvd is the go-to spot for off-leash fun! This 2-acre play paradise features separate enclosures for large dogs (over 30 pounds) and small dogs (30 pounds or less), so everyone can find their pack.
With a swimming pond to splash in and water stations to keep your pup hydrated, PAW Park is a dog’s dream come true. Just don’t forget to pack those shot records and pay the small membership fee. Oh, and leave the kiddos under 10 at home—this playground is strictly for the furry ones (and their adult humans). Grab a shady bench, let your pooch frolic, and enjoy the scene!
- Bar K
Let’s cover off on one more dog park for good measure. And this one is totally worth a visit—we promise that by the time you leave, you’ll already be planning a return trip. Bar K is the ultimate spot for dogs and their humans to hang out in style. Imagine this: while your pup runs wild in one of the spacious, supervised dog parks, you get to kick back with a cocktail. Yes, you read that right—adult beverages are on the menu!
Whether you’re enjoying a burger, sipping on a drink, or watching Fido make new besties, Bar K has something for everyone. And if you’re feeling extra festive, go ahead and throw your dog a birthday bash. Nothing says “I love my dog” like cake, cocktails, and zoomies all in one place!
- Lighthouse at East Wharf Trail
Okay, on to some fun walking paths. Enjoy getting on those steps for you and your pet. Snap-on that watch or clip on the pedometer because it’s time to watch those footsteps stack up! If you’re looking for a leisurely walk that won’t wear you (or your pup) out, the Lighthouse at East Wharf Trail is perfect. This 1.8-mile out-and-back route is easy on the paws and legs, making it great for anyone who isn’t up for a marathon. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy one of Oklahoma City’s scenic gems—the Lighthouse at East Wharf. Just keep Fido on a leash and take in the views as you rack up those steps!
- Stanley Draper Yellow Loop
Ready to step up the distance? The Stanley Draper Yellow Loop offers a 3.3-mile adventure for you and your pup. This moderately challenging trail has shaded paths, chances to spot wildlife, and a friendly atmosphere that’ll keep tails wagging. Just remember to leash up, bring bug spray (those ticks can be pesky), and maybe download a map—some trail markers like to play hide-and-seek. It’s a great year-round option when craving a bit more of a workout!
- SCIP Recreational Trail
Last but not least, on our list is the SCIP Recreational Trail. This one includes a 5.1-mile loop that’s perfect for those who want a little more space to roam. This easy trail is great for hiking or mountain biking, and it’s typically less crowded than others in the area. Just check the trail’s status before heading out—it tends to close when things get muddy. With picnic tables and a covered shelter at the trailhead, it’s a nice spot to enjoy a quiet day outdoors with your pup!

We’re confident that you’ll love the recommendations on our list—and Fido will, too! But, we’d be remiss if we didn’t end our article with a reminder about being a good pet steward. Not only does pet waste contaminate our water sources, but it is an eye-sore, as well. So, when you’re out and about enjoying Oklahoma City’s dog parks and pet-friendly walking trails, be sure to clean up after your pet, and yourself as well.
